The heartwarming ‘me4u@Christmas’ initiative mirrored the Catholic Charities school fundraising campaign, me4u, which raises funds for some of the most disadvantaged groups in the community.
Under the leadership of Katrina Kreiss, director of Religion and Spirituality, students put together themed bags for Centacare Catholic Community Services’ Foster Care Program. On the wish list were craft kits and sensory toys for children, care packs for women facing domestic violence and hygiene kits for families experiencing homelessness. And the children rose to the occasion, exceeding plans to fill 100 bags.
To add some festive cheer, the children poured their creativity into hand-painting the goodie bags in festive colours—decorating them with drawings of Santas, Christmas trees, baby animals and ‘Merry Xmas’ greetings.
“What a proud time to be part of the St Michael’s College community,” said Katrina Kreiss who was all praise for the efforts put in by the children and their parents.
“A group of eight students visited the classrooms to help promote the campaign and spread the message about why we should help others less fortunate.
“Over a two-week period students, parents and staff brought items in steady streams to our Innovation Centre.
“On the final day two students offered their assistance to go to each classroom to collect final donations. A group of 15 parent volunteers gave up their time to sort the donations and then pack the bags full.”
The team from Centacare’s Foster Care Program was thrilled to see the generous gifts of craft kits, board games, and books.
“We were completely speechless when we first saw the generous donations from St Michael’s Primary School,” said Danielle Lentini, Centacare Foster Care Program marketing and communication officer.
“The sight of bags overflowing with gifts and beautifully decorated packages left us in awe. It’s heartwarming to see such kind, caring families in our community, eager to support those in need during challenging times.
“The spirit of Christmas was truly evident in this initiative, and the children in the Centacare Foster Care program will be overjoyed when they receive these wonderful gifts.”
Centacare Family Services also expressed gratitude for the thoughtful care packs supporting their DV and Homelessness programs.
Amalie Mannik, executive manager, Children’s Services, Centacare, said it was heartwarming, at this time of year, to receive such a generous donation.
“The packs, full of essentials, will be greatly appreciated by individuals and families, who have been struggling with the cost-of-living pressures, as well as the housing crisis,” she said.
