Mural highlights Cardijn values
Schools
Four decades of Cardijn College history have been captured in a new mural at the school’s Marian Campus in Noarlunga.
Artist Leah Grant was enlisted as the artist in residence and alongside art teacher Marianna Mastrapasqua was tasked with creating a mural embodying Cardijn’s values and history to mark its 40th anniversary.
“The benefits of this artist in residency went beyond learning painting skills and allowed the students to learn about the process of creating a public art piece and the value in making something with a community,” Mrs Mastrapasqua said.
“Students grew in confidence and were inspired by the experience. This has been an opportunity for students and staff to work together building competencies in communication, group work, developing leadership skills, and creative thinking.”
Students were involved in brainstorming sessions, aerosol workshops and installation.
The final design is rich in symbolism.
On the left, three gumnuts and the words ‘See, Judge, Act’ represent the school’s motto and the Holy Trinity. Blue swirls symbolise the ocean, while leaves and patterns reflect the land. At the top of the mural, an inspiring quote by the school’s namesake Joseph Cardijn, reads: ‘You are worth more than all the gold in the world’.
The painting of the wall was a community effort with staff joining students to produce the artwork.
Cardijn College art captains Rikki Clarke and Kyra Hall said the mural was fun for everyone involved and they were pleased to be part of the experience as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations.
“We thank Leah Grant and the leadership team for making this experience possible,” Rikki said.
“Creating the mural was such an inspiring experience for not only me but everyone who was involved,” said Kyra.
