The future of podcasting talent was on display during the 2024 Arch D Podcasting Awards held at Sacred Heart College on November 24.
Many attendees and finalists dressed to impress to the 1980s theme.
The event celebrates the outstanding achievement of Catholic primary, middle and senior school students who created podcasts as part of the Arch D Radio and Podcasting program.
The judging panel included Arch D Radio and Podcasting host and producer James Meston, Cailin Alexander (multi-Arch D award winning old scholar from St Francis De Sales College who is now a weekday mornings announcer on Magic 105.9), Michaela Howard-Jones (former Arch D assistant producer and former Arch D award winner when she was a student at Sacred Heart College).
“They are two experienced radio announcers and podcasters who really know their stuff,” Mr Meston said. “Each category has a different set of criteria to make sure we’re judging each award on unbiased merit; and each category has its main capability based inside the CESA Living Learning Leading Framework for Curriculum. So, in ‘normal person’ language, each award is linked to a quality or capability that our schools consider really important in their student learning journey.”
Mr Meston said the quality of entries was outstanding.
“A new high benchmark reached this year made judging a very difficult exercise. Some of these students have now had a lot of experience podcasting, and the quality of their work is just exceptional.”
Some podcast episodes were created by pint-sized, first-time podcast creators.
“I’ve found myself asking students, ‘So, you’re SURE you’ve never done this before?’” Mr Meston said. “It’s embarrassing, but I do get a little jealous… there’s no way I could have produced something anywhere near as good as them when I started out.”
The winner of Podcaster of the Year (Senior) went to Nam Le from Blackfriars Priory School, the Podcaster of the Year (Middle) went to Isabella Angeletti from St Mary’s College, and Podcaster of the Year (Primary) was won by Koah Mitchell from St John The Baptist School.
