KI parish turns 70
Local
The launch of a book comprising stories of past and present priests and people of the Kangaroo Island parish will be one of the highlights of the community’s 70th anniversary celebrations next month.
At the end of 1954, the number of Catholics living on Kangaroo Island had grown to the point where Fr Robin Sutherland was appointed the full-time priest.
In six years he built the church at Kingscote, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, which is still operating today, and a church at Parndana which is now privately owned.
The laity has been an integral part of the Kangaroo Island parish, each person leaving their mark and helping to shape the church into what it is today.
One of those parishioners is Helen Mumford, editor of Echoes from the Walls, Memories of the Kangaroo Island Catholic Parish 1954-2024.
She said social events, family days and dances all helped to build community spirit.
“They have been enjoyed by young and old alike and help foster the strong supportive parishioners that we have today,” Helen added.
