The unique circumstances arising from the coronavirus pandemic mean the installation has been reduced to about 30 participants rather than the expected gathering of more than 2000 people.

Travel restrictions have also prevented family, clergy and bishops from interstate attending.

The installation ceremony will be conducted by Apostolic Administrator Bishop Greg O’Kelly SJ, who will read the bull of appointment of the ninth Archbishop of Adelaide.

The installation and celebration of the Eucharist on the solemnity of Our Lady Help of Christians (May 25) will be live streamed at 10.30am and replayed on community television station Channel 44 at 5.30pm on the feast of Our Lady Help of Christians.

Archbishop O’Regan arrived in Adelaide on May 5 and spent two weeks observing the COVID-19 protocol of isolation.

Originally from Bathurst, New South Wales, he was ordained a priest in 1983 and consecrated as Bishop of Sale in 2015.

The video produced by the Adelaide Archdiocese includes representatives of parishes, migrant communities, schools and Church agencies as well as messages from Archbishops Mark Coleridge and Tim Costelloe SDB.

Archbishop Coleridge, president of the Australian Bishops Conference, told Archbishop O’Regan that he and his fellow bishops were “very much with you in spirit”.

“Whoever would have thought that the boy from Bathurst would end up the Bishop of Adelaide via Sale,” Archbishop Coleridge said in his message.

“I did some of my schooling in Adelaide and Adelaide has always been part of my own story and it’s always had a special place in my heart so I’d simply say to you open your heart to Adelaide and Adelaide will certainly open its heart to you.

“May Mary Help of Christians, whose feast it is, guide you every step of the journey that lies ahead.”

“As president of the Plenary Council I look forward to working with you in helping all of us in the Church in Australia to listen to what the Spirit is saying,” said Archbishop Costelloe.
