Smyth Chapel project wins award

Conservation work undertaken on the National Heritage-listed Smyth Chapel at West Terrace Cemetery has been formally recognised by the Australian Civic Trust.
The Smyth Chapel, which underwent comprehensive heritage conservation work last year, has been awarded the 2019 Bob Such Award for Design for Social Benefit.
The Australian Civic Trust said the chapel had made “a significant contribution to the social environment” and deserved recognition.
The chapel opened in 1871 and is a Gothic-revival style mortuary chapel, designed by architect E.J. Woods, who also designed the Adelaide Town Hall and General Post Office.
Adelaide Cemeteries Authority chief executive officer Robert Pitt said the latest round of work had enabled the chapel to be brought back to its original condition and would remain a popular landmark within the cemetery.
The award also recognises the work of the Authority’s project team – project manager Paula Pothoven, heritage architect Andrew Stevens, Brimblecombe Builders, the Department of Environment & Water’s principal heritage advisor Luigi Vitale, Ian Hamilton of Arcuate Architecture, local stonemason Christian Frenzel and customer lead roofer James Henry.
