Caritas welcomes additional aid for Myanmar

Caritas Australia has welcomed the Federal Government’s commitment to additional relief efforts in Myanmar, following the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake of March 28.

Australia’s additional support includes $3.5 million to Australian Non Government Organisations (NGOs) and their local partners with a focus on food, water and sanitation and emergency health and education, and $500,000 contribution to the Emergency Action Alliance appeal.
It will also provide $3 million for emergency relief supplies and to support the efforts of the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management.
This support builds on Australia’s initial $2 million contribution to the International Committee for the Red Cross.
“The government’s additional commitments to relief efforts in Myanmar should be applauded as a demonstration of Australia’s ongoing commitment to global safety and security, especially in the Asia Pacific region, as made clear in its latest budget,” said Kirsten Sayers, interim CEO at Caritas Australia
“This commitment to Myanmar will support lifesaving interventions by relieving strain on the already thin resources and response capabilities on the ground. The need is stark as a third of the population – some 20 million people – needed humanitarian assistance before the earthquake and simply cannot survive being cut off from necessities such as food, shelter, and water.
“We also commend and echo the calls of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Hon Penny Wong, for an end to military operations allowing for full humanitarian access.”
Caritas Australia is supporting on the ground through its partners in Myanmar. These partners are assessing the situation, and preparing a response to the humanitarian requirements which are likely to include emergency shelter, food and other essentials, as well as psychosocial support.
