St Mark’s College at Port Pirie, has celebrated the opening of a new boarding facility as it continues to invest in education for rural students.

Comprising a recreation and dining room, 33 bedrooms and an outdoor leisure area, the state-of-the-art facility has housed 31 boarders since the beginning of the year. It was opened and blessed by Bishop Kulczycki SDS last month.
Boarding at St Mark’s originally started at Crystal Brook about 40 years ago and moved to the college site in 2007. The boarding house was completely rebuilt in 2024 with numbers increasing by eight to 31 this year.
“Our boarding students are an important part of our community, and we are committed to ensuring the continuation of boarding at St Mark’s and the provision of the best facilities,” said principal Sandra Hewson.
“Today, we celebrate not just the opening of a new building, but a significant investment in the future of rural and regional education in the Diocese of Port Pirie.
“By providing state-of-the-art facilities and a nurturing environment, we are ensuring that students from regional and remote areas have access to the same high-quality education and opportunities as their urban counterparts.”
Year 12 student Alexandra O’Neil, of Quorn, who is keenly pursuing a career in agriculture has been at the College for the past three years.
“As soon as you get here, it’s just got that sense of home,” said Alex.
“Having your own room and your own ensuite really gives you a sense of privacy, you get to have your own space completely to yourself, really relax in it and make it your own.”
First time Boarder Joe Piggot, who lives on a property 20km from Booleroo Centre has started in Year 9 at the College.
“Being at the Boarding House feels like you are on school camp all year, I love it,” he said.
“Leaving home was sad but exciting at the same time knowing that I am coming here for a good education and lots of fun.”
