Centenary of Hindmarsh church
Local
Planning for the centenary of Sacred Heart Church at Hindmarsh is under way with organisers calling for current and past parishioners to share their memories.
Blessed and opened on November 9 1924, the church was built to replace the original parish church at Brompton, St Saviour’s Church.
A report in The Southern Cross provides an interesting account of the event and gives an idea of how the new church was received:
‘Sunday, November 9 will surely remain for the parishioners of Brompton, a day to be long remembered, for on that day of cloudless sunshine, the event for which every heart had been longing for so many years, became at last an accomplished fact, and the magnificent church erected by the Sacred Heart Fathers was blessed and opened by His Grace, the Archbishop of Adelaide, Most Rev R W Spence OP.’
A committee of current Hindmarsh/Findon parishioners has been formed to plan and coordinate the centenary celebrations.
