Elderly are witnesses of hope says Pope Leo

Sunday, 26 July this year will be the sixth celebration of World Day for ‘Grandparents and the Elderly’.
Pope Leo XIV has chosen the theme “I will never forget you” taken from the book of the prophet Isaish (Is 49:15) to express God’s unconditional fidelity towards his people and reveal how the Lord’s love for each of us never fails, even in the fragility of old age.
The theme, said Archbishop Patrick O’Regan, “is intended to be a message of consolation and hope for all grandparents and the elderly, especially those who live in solitude or feel forgotten”.

At the same time, it is a call to families and ecclesial communities not to forget their elderly, recognising in them a presence and a blessing the Archbishop said.
Pope Leo, in his message, stresses that we are invited to recognise the elderly not as recipients of pastoral care, but as witnesses of hope who are active protagonists in the life of the Church.
The observance coincides with the liturgical feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus. The 2026 observance honours the faith, wisdom, and legacy of older generations
Archbishop O’Regan has invited all parishes to mark the day with local initiatives, a Eucharistic celebration with grandparents and the elderly, and a visit to those living in solitary conditions, bringing them the Holy Father’s message and a sign of closeness.
“With renewed thanks and asking God’s blessing in your communities,” he said.
