A (very long) lifetime of volunteering

Last month, gatherers at St Brigid’s Church in northern Adelaide celebrated the 100th birthday of one of their most dedicated and socially conscious parishioners.

Joan Thomas, who has now retired from a near lifetime of volunteering, gave many years to supporting the Clearview-Kilburn parish and along with her husband Frank, has also donated to many projects over the years.

The couple came into the Kilburn parish in 1949, soon after it was established through Fr Walsh. They were involved in every aspect of parish life almost immediately, including Vinnies, migrant support, preparation programs, the Parish Pastoral Council, the St Brigid’s School Board and many parish events.

Joan was active as a reader until recent years and still is connected to the parish through the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart nuns. Each of the couple’s children, Vincent, Robert, Gregory, Mary, John and Liz were baptised in the parish and went to school at St Brigid’s.
