Bountiful Christmas blessings

News

There were bountiful blessings at St Francis of Assisi School at Newton last month when students, staff and family came together for Christmas, the school’s 60th anniversary and a farewell to parish priest Fr Anthoni Adimai SdM.

A blessing of the cribs liturgy was Fr Adimai’s last event at the school. He returns to India in early January to take up the position of Superior General of the Society of St Eugene de Mazenod. It follows 16 years serving the Adelaide Archdiocese, including as administrator of St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral.

The school community is also celebrating 60 years since its establishment under the patronage of St Francis of Assisi, who created the first living nativity scene in 1223, as a symbol of the humility and simplicity of Jesus’ birth.

A highlight of the 60th anniversary year was the unveiling of a large mural that captures the spirit of the school’s faith, creativity and community.

Created in partnership with local artists Diego and Carolina from Diegodalo.com, the mural began with a series of drawings created by students. The individual artworks inspired the final composition, which the artists then combined into one design.

Displayed in the school’s multipurpose hall, the mural depicts the life and teachings of St Francis of Assisi as well as St Clare, St Joseph and St Mary MacKillop.

Every student from Reception to Year 6 took part in painting elements that reflect the school’s Franciscan values such as doves, animals and trees.

Principal Scott March said the project was a fitting tribute to the milestone year.

“This project allowed our students to express what St Francis means to them; love of nature, faith, peace and kindness,” he said.

“It’s a beautiful reminder that our story is built by many hands and hearts working together. The mural is really about belonging, and each student leaving their mark on the history of the school.”

St Francis of Assisi School was founded more than six decades ago by Italian immigrant families who built the parish and school by hand.

The mural unveiling formed part of a week-long celebration that included an anniversary Mass, displays of historical photographs and artefacts, and community gatherings.

Fr Adimai, who is also parish priest of Tranmere, was only 36 when he first arrived in Adelaide and within six months he was appointed parish priest of Hectorville and Tranmere.

“Adelaide has taught me so much – how to manage multiple churches, how to work with different cultures, even how to fundraise with bingo nights,” he said.

“The love I received here, I carry with me. It’s given me the confidence to say ‘yes’ to God’s next ask.”
