Calling all pilgrims of hope

Local

St Aloysius Church at Sevenhill was the ultimate destination for 250 pilgrims who joined Archbishop Patrick O’Regan for the first of a series of visits to sacred sites in South Australia as part of the Jubilee year.

The pilgrims came from all over the Adelaide Archdiocese, making their way by bus or car and some even walking part of the way.

Lauren Bierer from the Archdiocese’s Community Life and Worship Office said a Jubilee pilgrimage created a special opportunity to “encounter God’s mercy, grow in faith and experience spiritual renewal”.

Young pilgrims at Sevenhill

Following the success of the Sevenhill pilgrimage, Lauren urged the faithful to consider a pilgrimage to one of the State’s three Jubilee sites – St Aloysius Church, St Joseph’s Church in Penola and St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral in Adelaide – to journey in prayer and celebrate Mass as pilgrims of hope.

Archbishop O’Regan will make pilgrimage to Penola for Mass on August 23.

“Penola is a special place where Mary MacKillop and Julian Tenison Woods co-founded the uniquely Australian Sisters of Saint Joseph in 1866 and is considered the birthplace of Catholic education in SA,” Lauren said.

“Just over four hours from Adelaide, you can find many accommodation options in the area and organise a tour of the Mary MacKillop Centre to see historical exhibitions and the old schoolhouse.

“You may also want to make a stop at the iconic ‘Father Woods Tree’ on the Riddoch Highway, known as the place where Fr Julian would meditate and prepare his sermons.”
