Fifty-five years after they celebrated their marriage in Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, Pennington, Joe and Katharina Ryan have renewed their vows with the blessing of the same priest who married them.

Katharina (Kath) Tschaban, of Ukrainian and German parents, married Joseph (Joe) Ryan on March 30 1970.

The celebrant was Fr John Swann, (now Mgr Swann) who when retired came to live in his hometown, Kapunda.

After their wedding, Kath and Joe moved to Kapunda where Joe was born and where they have lived ever since.

Kath’s first teaching appointment was at Kapunda Primary School and over the years the couple has been involved in many community activities, including through the parish.

Joe was the first child of seven. His six siblings were also married by Mgr Swann who became a special person in the lives of the Ryan family which now numbers 74. Mgr Swann is a regular attendee at the Ryan Christmas gatherings at the local football club.

Joe said not only were he and his siblings married by the same priest, they were also all still married to the same partner!

He said it was “very special” for he and Kath to renew their vows in the presence of Mgr Swann and the St Rose of Lima parishioners.
