Telling stories through dance
Schools
A kaleidoscope of colour hit the stage when Mary MacKillop College students took part in this year’s Dance Showcase held at Seymour College.

The showcase is a culmination of Specialist Dance subjects at MacKillop and serves as both an assessment for Stage 2 Dance choreography and performance and an opportunity to perform in front of the school community and the public.
“Dance Academy runs for a full year in Year 8 and 9 and enables those students with a dance background, opportunities for extension,” said Mary MacKillop dance and drama teacher Rachel Scott.
“Year 7 Performance Team is an extracurricular group held at lunchtimes.”
This year marked the first time Mary MacKillop entered the Schools Challenge held at Adelaide’s Entertainment Centre.
“We were among 13 schools presenting an eight-minute story through dance and drama, reflecting one or more of the Schools Challenge values such as positive body image, growth mindset and having a voice,” Mrs Scott said.
“Our item included 45 students from Year 7 to 9 and was an adaption of fairytales with the central characters deciding to create their own ending to their story rather than having it told for them.”
For their efforts, the school received the top award for Choreography and runner up for Costuming and Props.
“Last year our group of Stage 2 Dance students did particularly well, receiving three A+ results and one A+ with Merit (received by Alessia Cardinale),” Mrs Scott said.
“Her self-devised choreography drew inspiration from the legacy of Mary MacKillop, reflecting her excommunication and ability to inspire others.”
