Xavier College students headed to Carclew House in North Adelaide last month to take part in the Catholic Education South Australia’s Thriving People event.
The excursion provided Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Year 3 to Year 10 students with a valuable opportunity to connect with peers, celebrate their cultural heritage, and deepen understanding of their identities.
Engagement with contemporary and emerging art forms allowed them to explore innovative ways to express their heritage in modern times.

“Wood carving was a good way to let out my emotions and it helped me clear my mind,” said Xavier College student Curtis.
“It was nice connecting to my First Nations culture,”
“I liked the dancing workshop because it is important to my culture,’” added fellow student Sienna.
“My favourite part was the dancing and the weaving,” Aliyha said.
“Weaving is challenging, but the dancing was cool how we were able to incorporate animal poses into the hip-hop dance.”
Student Charlotte also expressed enthusiasm for crafting.
“The weaving was a therapeutic experience because I like making things the way our ancestors would.”
