Chemistry teacher, John Papanicolas, who retired at the end of 2022, said it was the first time that two students from Saint Ignatius’ had received the award and as far as he and other teaching staff were aware, it wasn’t common for more than one person to be the recipient.

“I hope that I made it (chemistry) interesting and made it fun for them so that they wanted to do the learning to get to that point in time.”
Austen, who is taking a gap year in 2023 and hopes to study medicine, praised Mr Papanicolas for being a “good teacher and making chemistry enjoyable”.
“I really liked how it all made sense and came together,” Austen said.
