Preparing for life as a married couple

Like most couples getting ready for their wedding day, Emily Skara and Deion Matulic are busy with preparations to ensure their guests enjoy the wonderful celebration. But more importantly, they are preparing themselves to receive the sacrament of marriage.
Both members of the Croatian Catholic Community, the couple will marry in St Patrick’s Church next year and said attending marriage preparation classes with Fr Michael Romeo over the next few months would be an important part of getting ready for life as husband and wife.
“We hope our marriage preparations will give us a renewed perspective on our relationship and teach us how to live our lives as a married couple,” Emily said.
“What we learn will hopefully guide us through times of difficulty, provide us with a strong foundation for our marriage and grow our connection to our faith.”
Some of the areas that will be covered in the classes include their family origins – where they’ve come from, their childhood and how they were brought up by their families; what the Bible says about the sacrament of marriage; issues that arise in marriage; communication and finances; and family and children.
As Fr Romeo is parish priest in Penola some of the preparation classes may be via telephone but Emily and Deion will also meet with him on several occasions.
Emily said they were delighted that Fr Romeo had agreed to officiate at their wedding on February 15.
“We are very grateful as he has married a number of our friends and family members and we have always wanted him to marry us,” she said, adding that St Patrick’s Church was also significant to them.
“Being brought up in the Croatian Catholic Community, we both have long standing connections to St Patrick’s Church as our local parish.
“Both our parents were married in St Patrick’s, we were both baptised in St Patrick’s and so we are very happy to be getting married there.”
Deion said being raised in strong Catholic Croatian families meant there would be some traditions observed on their special day.
“One Croatian tradition that we will be having is to pin a stick of rosemary tied with a ribbon on each of our guests.
“This tradition is used as a sign of welcome to all of our guests and to signify to others all the people who have been a part of our special day,” he said.
