News
The Catholic community is mourning the loss of one of the State’s most significant laymen, David Shinnick OAM.
Mr Shinnick, brother of retired priest Fr Maurice Shinnick, died on November 11 at the age of 94.
He served in a number of capacities for many years in the Archdiocese of Adelaide, including as director of the Diocesan Pastoral Renewal, initiated by Archbishop James Gleeson.
Highly regarded at the national level, he was one of the driving forces behind the Catholic Church’s international aid and development agency in Australia, known today as Caritas Australia.

Pope John Paul II conferred on Mr Shinnick the honour of Knight of St Sylvester (KSS) in 1981, and in 1996 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for services to Church and Community.
In 2016 David Shinnick handed over almost a lifetime’s work when he presented the Adelaide Archdiocese’s archives department with 13 bound copies of documents detailing several aspects of the history of the diocese over more than three decades.
The Funeral Mass for the late David Shinnick OAM will be celebrated at St Bernadette’s Church, 1263 South Road, St Mary’s, on November 20 at 11am.
