Deacons gather for feast of St Lawrence
Events
Deacons from the Archdiocese of Adelaide celebrated Mass with Archbishop Patrick O’Regan on August 13, a date close to the feast of St Lawrence, one of the first deacons in the Church who was martyred in the Third Century.
Eight deacons and several of wives of deacons gathered for a late morning Mass in the Cathedral of St Francis Xavier that included a renewal of ordination promises. Eveleen Kerr, widow of the late Deacon Nick Kerr, also attended.
Following the Mass, Archbishop Patrick O’Regan hosted a BBQ lunch at the Archbishop’s House.
Deacon Tim Grauel said while the event is not the only opportunity for deacons to gather with Archbishop Patrick, it was an annual gathering that highlighted the enduring witness to the Gospel evidenced by St Lawrence’s life and martyrdom.
“Deacons were reminded by Archbishop Patrick to emulate St Lawrence’s keen attentiveness to the poor, infirm and isolated among us—and to see in them the ‘true treasures of the Church’,” Deacon Grauel said.
