The celebration of the 110th World Day of Migrants and Refugees at St Martin’s Church was a tribute to the multicultural character of the Greenacres/Walkerville parish community.

A well-attended Mass featured representatives from more than 25 countries, many of whom were brightly clad in their national dress.

Flags representing the many nationalities were brought forward during the offertory procession and were displayed at the foot of the altar.

Liturgy readings and prayers were presented in several languages with the English translation on the overhead screen.

Deacon Andrew Kirkbride surprised the gathering by asking everyone who was born overseas to stand up.

Amazingly, it comprised about half the congregation.

Following the Mass, parishioners filled St Martin’s Hall where they enjoyed morning tea and new friendships.

Parishioner Reg Nye said the wide representation of parishioners, many who were from younger age groups, augured well for the development of a missionary community.
