SA Catholics celebrate Ash Wednesday
News
Many thousands of Catholics around the State will attend Ash Wednesday services today to mark the beginning of Lent.
Ash Wednesday is a day of penitence, prayer and fasting. Worshippers’ foreheads are marked with ash in the shape of a cross as a reminder of their own mortality and reliance on God’s tender mercy, justice and forgiveness.
The ashes come from palm fronds used at Palm Sunday Mass the previous year but this year some parishes are also using ash from the recent bushfires in South Australia.
Mass will be held in St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral at 10am, 12.10pm and 5.45pm.
