Building on the ‘OLSHie’ spirit

International Women’s Day on March 8 will have special significance for Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) College as it celebrates 75 years of empowering girls to grow in confidence and step into the world as courageous leaders.
Acting deputy principal Sonia Venour said the all-girls secondary college’s mission aligned with the spirit of International Women’s Day, which is dedicated to celebrating women’s achievements and advocating for equality and empowerment.
“Each year, International Women’s Day encourages communities to reflect on the opportunities that support girls and women to thrive,” she said.
“This commitment to empowerment is deeply embedded within the culture at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College.

“From Years 7–12, students are given numerous opportunities to participate in leadership programs, class and co-curricula activities designed to support personal growth, develop leadership skills and nurture confidence.
“In a safe, inclusive environment all girls can challenge themselves, deepen their understanding of the world and mentor one another.”
Ms Venour said this was clearly demonstrated by the 2025 Student Leader Team which launched a new initiative centred on building community and the proud ‘OLSHie’ spirit.
Students across Years 7–12 were invited to contribute ideas, nominating a range of inspirational women and names connected to the college’s charism.
The student leaders chose the name Ametur Shield, reflecting the motto of the Daughters of our Lady of the Sacred Heart, ‘May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be everywhere loved’, a decision that reflects both tradition and the continuing legacy of young women shaping the future of OLSH College.
“International Women’s Day provides a meaningful moment to recognise and celebrate this ongoing journey,” Ms Venour said.
“It reminds us that empowering girls is not limited to one day. It’s a daily commitment, woven into every learning experience and leadership opportunity.”

At the heart of OLSH College’s International Women’s Day celebrations is a deep connection to the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and their vision, legacy and influence on education in Australia.
“We are committed to ensuring every student, staff member, family, alumnae and friend continues to experience and share the joy of the OLSH charism,” Ms Venour said.
To mark the college’s 75th anniversary this year, each home class has been entrusted with a wooden heart as a symbol of the love and dedication of the OLSH Sisters.
The wooden hearts also encourage students to look to Mary as a model of compassion, courage and faith.
OLSH College will hold an open day on Sunday March 15 from 1pm to 3pm. Registrations online at: olsh.catholic.edu.au/book-tour
