Carols for all ages
Schools
Residents and staff from Aldersgate Residential Aged Care were treated to a morning of Christmas carols by St Pius X students last month.
Facilitated by the Windsor Gardens school’s Wellbeing coordinator and Reception teacher Holli Caputo, the event was the culmination of weekly visits to the school by aged care residents since Term 3.
Activities included storytelling, craft and art as well as singing and dancing.
The project started as a way for Reception to Year 2 students to interact, work with and enjoy the company of older citizens who may not have the opportunity to do this in their care facility.
“We also realised that not only did the children enjoy the visits and the conversations, but so did the staff who accompanied the residents,” said Rita Campbell, assistant principal, Religious Identity and Mission.
“On top of this, positive relationships have formed and the residents have also benefitted from the activities and conversations.”
The initiative follows a similar arrangement with another retirement village and the Out of Hours School Care program with OHSC director Lauren Ryder inviting volunteers to teach children games and crafts.
