Church bells rang as members of the Mercedes College community gathered to celebrate Mercy Day in St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral.

The bellringing was organised by a current and former student who are bellringers for the Cathedral.

Celebrated by Fr John Shanahan with Fr Pastor Mumburi cp and Deacon Andrew Kirkbride, the Mass on September 29 was also an opportunity to farewell liturgist Sr Duyen Nguyen who has been elected to the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea leadership team.  Two students gave a moving rendition of the Suscipe of Catherine McAuley in honour of Sr Duyen.Catherine Edwards receives her award from principal Andrew Balkwill.

After the Mass, the 2023 Mercy Award was presented to Catherine Edwards, Mercedes College graduate from the class of 2015, who recently returned from New York where she was an intern for Mercy Global Action. A founding member of Young Mercy Links, She will take up a position in the Australian Electoral Commission graduate program in Canberra in January.

In addition, the 2023 John Fanning Social Justice Award was presented to Year 12 student Sannawar Sandhu. During her time at Mercedes she has demonstrated a commitment to fairness and enabling a socially-just society where human rights are respected and discrimination is not tolerated. This is evidenced by her active role as a student representative, including her exploration of a solution for young women through a partnership with Pixii to ensure all students can easily access feminine hygiene products in bathrooms.
