Ash Wednesday marked with prayer of peace
Schools
For the first time in the history of St Francis School at Lockleys, the community gathered outdoors for an Ash Wednesday liturgy.
More than 400 children and 40 staff participated in the COVID-safe service.
Ash Wednesday begins the 40 days of preparation for Easter.
Fr Michael Trainor led the liturgy and reminded the school community that Lent is a time to reflect on their lives and open their hearts to God.
Students from varying year levels participated in the liturgy, with a year 6 student offering a prayer of peace for the people of Ukraine.
During the liturgy and supported by principal Phil Shultz, the staff and students of St Francis were sprinkled with ashes.
One child described this celebration as “memorable” and others said it was “comforting to celebrate Ash Wednesday this year”.
The school also used the opportunity to launch Project Compassion’s theme For all Future Generations.
