Parishioners at Kapunda, in St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Northern Light parish, had two things to celebrate on May 9.

The first was the very welcome fall of rain. The second was the delivery and mounting of a sign commemorating the work of St Mary MacKillop and the Sisters of St Joseph in the region.

The sign was erected on the front of the former presbytery, now the parish centre, in Kapunda. It describes some of the activities of St Mary and the Josephite Order in the area and directions to the former Women’s Reformatory at St John’s, just east of the town.

The council has renamed the track used by St Mary to get from Kapunda to St John’s ‘Mary MacKillop Walk’.

Parishioners and four sisters of St Joseph came together to mark the occasion and thank those responsible. Peter Swann gathered the information and Maria Brett co-ordinated the project.

The celebration included a shared lunch with the pumpkin soup particularly popular!
