More than 60 people from the Preca Community in Adelaide gathered for the fifth biannual Preca family weekend in the Adelaide Hills last month.

The theme of the weekend was ‘Our Call to Holiness in the Modern World’ which was inspired by Pope Francis’ recent apostolic exultation of the same name.

The family weekends are the brainchild of a mother who thought these gatherings would provide a great opportunity to grow in faith as a community. Later, several other parents joined to brainstorm goals and ideas and eventually came up with some activities: daily Mass and rosary and age specific faith building workshops with plenty of free time for socialising, cooking and eating.

During the recent winter retreat, Bishop Elect Charles Gauci led daily Mass and one parent workshop where he facilitated a discussion about how parents can foster and nourish the faith of children and youth to lead a holy life.

In the youth workshops, teens and young adults reflected on their relationship with God by using modelling clay as a medium. They also had group discussions on extracts of the Pope’s latest apostolic exultation.

A team of parents led by a Preca member provided home-cooked Italian and Indian food including baked breakfasts and hot chocolate in the evenings.

A spokesperson for the group John Micallef said the weekends were a “great way to nourish faith in family and community in a stress free and peaceful environment”.
