The Star of the Sea School’s Marine Discovery Centre is getting a makeover, thanks to a Fund My Neighbourhood grant announced recently.
Premier Jay Weatherill presented representatives of the school a cheque for $170,000 to cover the cost of updating the unique centre located at the Henley Beach school.
New innovative state-of-the-art interactive models will be included as part of the refurbishment and the interior décor will be updated. A new underwater Sea Cave and Aboriginal displays will also be new features.
Patron of the centre, Professor Chris Daniels from UniSA accepted the cheque on behalf of the school and spoke of the significant contribution the MDC makes in raising awareness about marine environmental care to the 8000 children who visit each year.
The award-winning MDC has hosted more than 100,000 primary school students over the past 20 years. The visitors come from the State, Independent and Catholic sectors, including a school visiting from Victoria.
