Fitting tribute to trailblazing journalist

Adelaide journalist Samela Harris has been recognised for her pioneering work in the South Australian media at the 27th annual Catholic Archbishop of Adelaide Media Citations.
The winner of the 2017 Mary MacKillop Award for an outstanding contribution to journalism, Harris was acknowledged for continuing the work of her late father Max Harris who championed the cause of Mary MacKillop as “a saint for all Australians”.
The former News Ltd journalist has been assisting the Sisters of St Joseph in raising funds for a new Mary MacKillop Museum at Kensington.
Archbishop Philip Wilson said Harris was well respected and highly regarded for her “fairness, exacting standards and flair”, making her a worthy winner of the award.
“She has been a strong advocate for social justice and is much-admired by her peers, as a journalist and a mentor,” he said.
Harris is travelling in the United States and therefore was unable to attend the awards ceremony but her close friend ABC Radio host Peter Goers outlined her achievements and Sr Mary Ryan RSJ accepted the award on her behalf.
Other major award winners announced today by Archbishop Wilson were: James Gratton, Messenger Community News; Craig Cook, The Advertiser, Caroline Winter, ABC Radio PM Program; James Meston, ArchD Radio (1079 Life); Angelique Donnellan and Nicola Gage, ABC TV; and Anthony Hill, ABC TV.
Commendations were presented to: Katrina Stokes, The Advertiser/Sunday Mail; Martina Simos and Lauren Novak, The Advertiser; Jason Balk, BBB FM Radio, and Tricia Watkinson, The Advertiser. A full list of winners and judges comments is available at www.adelaide.catholic.org.au
