The small Parkside school entered 19 unique works into the Gifted Awareness Lego Competition and Gifted Awareness Art Competition directed by Rebecca Napier, who is the Gifted Education advisor for Catholic Education South Australia. Entries were judged by a panel including Dr Napier, professional artists, a university professor and their team of students.

Sam’s entry in the art competition.

Reception student Sam was awarded one of only two honourable mentions, as a standout across all school and year levels.

Dr Napier said his work had created a lot of interest with audiences, with people asking ‘what was he thinking’ and talking about ‘how mature his drawing is’.

“For a Reception student to gain an honourable mention across all year levels is outstanding. The St Raphael’s community could not be more proud of Sam and all our entrants,” said Marianne Farrugia, assistant principal and director of Learning at St Raphael’s.

“The Gifted Awareness competitions allowed our learners to shine and demonstrate their abilities and talents,” added Deborah Hansen, the school’s Numeracy and STEM leader.

“The outstanding entries were a credit to our learners and showcase the many talents of St Raphael’s learners.”

St Raphael’s competition placegetters were – Lego Maze: Daniel H and Sebastian B (Year 1-2 category) tied for 1st place; Nicholas P (Year 3-4) 1st. Art: Sam F (Reception) 1st and Honourable mention; Jemima M (Year 3-4) 1st; Mia P (Year 3-4) 2nd; Matthew G (Year 1-2) 3rd.
