Hospital care at home a game changer

When you are ill and need ongoing medical support, the thought of being admitted to hospital can be daunting. However, under a new innovative program, some patients are now able to receive hospital care in the comfort and familiar surroundings of their own home.
Established earlier this year, My Home Hospital is a Wellbeing SA service delivered by a joint venture between Calvary and Medibank.
The program enables patients to access care in the form of doctors, nurses, allied health practitioners, some X-rays and blood tests, medication and other support services while remaining in their home. They are sent an admission pack and kit, which includes a touch screen tablet and remote monitor devices, allowing for regular communication between them and the medical professionals.
A member of the My Home Hospital care team visit patients each day or more often if needed.
Referrals to the program are made by GPs, medical specialists, nurse practitioners, paramedics or an emergency department or hospital. Currently the program is suitable for people with specific health conditions such as respiratory infections or inflammations, kidney and urinary tract infections, and some skin infections.
Catherine Henry is one of the hundreds of patients who have already been cared for under My Home Hospital.
“It made sense for me because I’m at home looking after a two year old and still breast feeding, so the significance of having to stop that to go into hospital made this option easier,” she said.
“I think the most impressive thing was the technology – being able to use the blood pressure monitor and the fact that it Blue-toothed seamlessly through to the touch screen tablet.
“My consults with the doctors were done via audio call. All the nurses were fantastic, really professional.
“Being in your own environment means you get a good night’s sleep and the freedom associated with that, as opposed to being in hospital in a bed. You are able to get up and do your own things. It’s a much more pleasant experience.”
Health Minister Stephen Wade said the program heralded a new era for healthcare in the State.
“Patients do not always have to be physically in hospital to receive the care they need,” he said.
“My Home Hospital gives patients the option for doctors, nurses, and allied health practitioners to deliver care right into their home.
“A key benefit of home-based care is to reduce the risk of hospital-based infection, a heightened concern as we continue to deal with the COVID pandemic.
“This innovative and patient-centred approach will not only provide care from the comfort of people’s homes but increase hospital capacity and reduce pressure on the wider health system.”
