Faith-filled students supported by Knights

A creative design student and a talented musician, both committed to their Catholic faith, are the recipients of the John Brewer Scholarships awarded by the Knights of the Southern Cross.
Lucy Bray from Samaritan College, Whyalla, and Teresa Kelly from St Mary’s College in the city were presented with their awards at the Australia Day Mass held in St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral in January.
Established 24 years ago by the Knights of the Southern Cross, the $1500 scholarship will assist the students with their fees and education expenses during Year 12.
In nominating Teresa for the 2018 award, St Mary’s APRIM Robert Napoli outlined the various ways she is part of the “faith life” of the college.
“In true Dominican fashion, her deep faith is lived out in a very practical manner, evidenced in her commitment and involvement in the social justice life of the college. Her future aspirations in life also show her commitment to creating a more just world through her empathetic approach, modelled on the life and practice of Jesus,” he said.
College music captain for 2019, Teresa is involved in liturgical music at school celebrations and was integral in the establishment of the newly-formed Ministry Team at St Mary’s.
Teresa said she felt lucky to have travelled to Italy and Ireland with St Mary’s for language, music and history immersions and added a special highlight for her was attending the student Dominican ‘Common Ground’ conference last year, where she gained a deeper insight into the extent of the global Dominican community.
While she has an interest in both creative subjects such as design and music, Teresa said her passion for STEM subjects meant she was now considering a future career in engineering.
An altar server at the Cathedral for six years, Teresa is a member of the Guild of St Stephen.
Lucy is a senior altar server in the Whyalla parish and now helps to train and mentor young servers. She willingly offers her voice to the many issues relating to youth in the Church and recently attended the diocesan assembly in Port Pirie.
An active participant in the liturgical life of Samaritan College, Lucy is hoping to pursue a “dream occupation” in the area of game art/design and illustration.
“I consider my creativity a blessing and a personal gift from God, which motivates me to share my passion with others,” she said.
The scholarship is named after deceased KSC member John Brewer who gave many years of service to his church, community and the Knights.
