The near life-size image was blessed last month by parish priest Fr Denis Ssemuju.

Fr Kain said he was approached about 15 months ago by the school’s APRIM Angela DeNadai about creating something for an arch in the wall of the new chapel adjacent to the school hall.

He decided to paint Mary “as though she is coming through the door into the hall”, carrying her cross in one hand and the words ‘in all things love’ in the other.

At the blessing Fr Kain, who was parish priest of Glenelg and Plympton before his retirement in 2019, explained to students the importance of religious icons. He said Mary’s eyes looked directly at the viewer, encouraging them to “learn about holiness and invite us into an education of faith”.

The Plympton school was established by the Sisters of St Joseph in 1935.
