Arch D announces awards via podcast

Thinking creatively in these ever-changing times has enabled the Arch D Catholic youth radio show to go ahead and announce its 2020 award winners using one of its recognised mediums – the podcast.

Initially the awards night was scheduled for Friday March 13 but was postponed after the Sacred Heart College venue was closed for cleaning in response to a student testing positive for coronavirus.

With government restrictions then in place for the number of people able to gather indoors, Arch D producer James Meston had to think creatively if the awards were to go ahead at all.

“It was clear that some serious out-of-the-box thinking was required,” said James.

“I mean, how can you gather 150 people together and have a red-carpet awards ceremony, but not be able to be in the same room?”

Fortunately, the answer lay right in the middle of Arch D’s offerings in the form of a podcast.

Recorded as close to its release date as possible – with the winners kept secret until it went ‘live’ – the awards also included a ‘red carpet’ which was launched on Facebook an hour prior to the podcast release.

“Students and guests could send in their photos in their ‘red carpet looks’ so that they could still be as much a part of the event as possible,” he said.

The Arch D Radio Awards is a major event for Catholic schools and students passionate about developing the voice of young people and learning about creating high quality radio shows and podcasts.

Since starting in 2011, the Arch D radio show has grown its audience to more than 30,000 listeners each week. It can be heard on 1079 Life every Wednesday at 9pm and every Saturday at 10pm.

The awards podcast was released on Arch D’s School Life Podcast Channel, which is available to subscribe on all popular podcast apps, including Spotify, Apple, Google and iHeart. The podcast is available at https://soundcloud.com/schoollifepodcast/the-arch-d-awards-2020
