The St Alphonsa Syro-Malabar parish community celebrated the feast of St Alphonsa on September 22, following nine days of Novena leading up to the event.

Each day of the Novena brought a different intention to focus on during the offering of the Holy Mass and the Rosary led by Syro-Malabar priests serving in the Adelaide Archdiocese, alongside various community groups.
The festivities culminated in a vibrant celebration attended by more than 1000 members of the Syro-Malabar community.
The traditional flag hoisting ceremony, Kodiyettu, was held on September 20, marking the beginning of the feast preparations.
The highlight of the celebration was the presence of Bishop John Panamthottail CMI, the Eparchial Bishop of the Syro-Malabar Church in Australia, who served as the main celebrant at the Holy Mass. During the Mass, Bishop John read the decree elevating St Alphonsa parish to the status of ‘forane’, a significant recognition of the community’s growing presence within the Archdiocese.
Fr Dean Marin addressed the community, sharing insights on the importance of unity and faith within the Syro-Malabar tradition.
Following his inspiring address he led the solemn procession, a poignant and significant part of the feast. Parishioners joyfully participated by carrying statues of saints, decorative umbrellas and papal flags.
The church was adorned with floral decorations and traditional garlands, creating a festive atmosphere. Adding to the excitement, both Scottish and Kerala band sets performed, infusing the celebration with a rich tapestry of cultural music.
Young members of the community showcased their talents through a flash mob while Sunday school students ran stalls featuring balloon animals, ring toss, henna and face painting.
“It was a great honour to express such a pinnacle moment of our faith and culture through this celebration,” one community member said.
“Upon seeing the diverse exhibition of culture and tradition on feast day, many of the faithful were able to reminisce about participating in this feast throughout their own childhood.”
The feast of St Alphonsa is testament to the vibrant and growing Syro-Malabar community in Adelaide.
