The CWL held an Archdiocesan Day of Reflection on August 6, facilitated by lay Catholic leader Geraldine Hawkes.

“We focused on love and compassion, and the need for rest in our lives,” Geraldine said.

“Taking a break so that we can nourish ourselves to be loving, compassionate people in our daily lives is important. There’s a real hunger for it which people are expressing more and more. How do you find inner piece that enables you to be happy in life?”

The day involved art, music and poetry. One of the focus points was falling in love.

“Love affects everything,” Geraldine said.

“We talked about what gets them out of bed in the morning, what they read, the music they like, and what breaks their heart. So that’s like the love of it, because love influences and helps our choices.”

CWL’s next Archdiocesan council meeting will be held on Tuesday October 1 at 10.30am in the the St Aloysius Board Room. The guest speaker will be Carolyn Wild, author of a book called Fun & Quirky Classics. Carolyn will talk about the physical and emotional benefits of laughter as well as her own experience using laughter to help overcome trauma.

Late in October, the CWL State Conference will be held. The theme is ‘Women of Faith’ which provides a chance to reflect on the wonderful women of faith who started CWL in South Australia 110 years ago. Back in 1918, these women purchased 178 East Terrace and opened St Mary’s Hostel. In 1974 they moved to demolish St Mary’s Hostel in favour of a Child Care Centre and now have the opportunity to move forward as ‘women of faith’ with the substantial financial backing received from the sale of the property.

The State Conference on Saturday October 12 will be held at St John the Baptist Parish Hall, Plympton, and features an inspirational line-up of guest speakers. All are welcome but registration and payment is necessary.

“CWL is very active on social justice, and they are amazing at connecting with one another and being active within communities,” Geraldine said.

“For any woman who is experiencing a bit of loneliness or isolation, I recommend they get in touch with Catholic Women’s League. They’re an energetic bunch. The Day of Reflection has been an amazing experience. We’re all of a certain age and there’s a real sense of possibility and a fire in the belly.”
