Reflecting on leadership

Adelaide Archdiocese Pastoral Service Support worker Orla Wright visited the Northern Light parish this month for a formation session with the leadership team.
Parish priest Father Mark Sexton said when the Northern Light parish was formed from what was previously Kapunda, Balaklava, Barossa and Hamley Bridge parishes, it had a “somewhat different leadership model”.
Rather than a formal Parish Pastoral Council, it formed an executive comprising representatives from each Mass centre.
“The idea was that the representative didn’t always have to be the same person,” Fr Sexton said.
“The role could be shared or rotated around the community. Pastoral support was devolved very much at the local level, each community being the best judge of what was needed.
“That was 12 years ago, so between the march of time – and COVID – conditions have changed. It was felt that a refresh was needed.”
Orla was invited to meet with members of the executive and working groups from the two largest communities to begin a process of reflecting on what leadership entails today.
