Young voices fill Cathedral

Local

Reinvigorating the Cathedral’s music program has resulted in the creation of a children’s choir which will perform at several Masses this year.

Formed in response to an inspiration of the late Archbishop Philip Wilson, members of the choir have already delighted Mass-goers with their beautiful voices at the Solemnity of Christ the King, Blessing of the Cribs and 6pm Mass on Christmas Eve.

Cathedral Music director Timothy Davey and Music coordinator Astrid Sengkey are conducting rehearsals every Saturday afternoon and it is planned the choir will sing at Sunday Mass once a month this year.

“Their enthusiasm, commitment and positive attitude are an inspiration to us,” Astrid and Timothy said.

“The children work really well as a choral group and they sing beautifully.”

There are currently 11 children aged from 5 to 11 years participating in the choir, and most of their families are members of the Cathedral parish. It is expected that the choir will expand further over the coming months.
