Tapping into direct giving

News

Not having any cash in your purse or wallet will no longer be an excuse for not contributing to collections during Mass, thanks to the introduction of direct giving via your mobile phone.

In response to a growing demand for cashless methods of donating, the Adelaide Archdiocese has upgraded its Find a Mass app to enable people to use their credit or debit card to make a one-off or recurring donation to the first, second and special collections.

After downloading or updating the Adelaide Archdiocese app, the user logs in once to the ‘Giving’ page and has their details saved, including the name of their parish, and can then make regular contributions to the first collection (for care of the clergy) and the second collection (for parishes or communities). Special collections are also listed as an option at relevant times throughout the year.

The Archdiocese of Adelaide Find a Mass app, which already has more than 4500 users, has been further enhanced to include daily readings, podcasts and videos as well as the existing events and The Southern Cross news sections.

Communications manager Jenny Brinkworth said the inclusion of the giving facility followed feedback from parishes and clergy that people were less likely to carry cash with them to Mass these days and alternative ways of contributing were needed.

She said many people were now accustomed to using their phones to make payments and this would only increase in coming years.

“The current focus on hygiene due to COVID-19 makes it all the more timely to have a cashless method of giving,” she added.

App developer and founder of Dexterity Solutions Ginil Fernandez said the process was designed to be user friendly, safe and transparent with parishes and communities able to easily access reports on transactions which are compliant with payment card security standards.

Mr Fernandez said the app took less than 30 seconds to “set and forget” with a recurring donation.

A short YouTube video has been produced to show how it works https://youtu.be/DvnbCbDUgOE.

Listed as the ‘Archdiocese of Adelaide’ app, it can be downloaded from the Apple or Google Play stores, or updated for those who have already downloaded the original version of the app. It is also available on a web platform http://adelaide.goodgiving.com.au.
