Fr Sean laid to rest in Ireland

The last Irish priest to minister in the Adelaide Archdiocese, Fr Sean McGearty, was laid to rest in his home village of Ballivor, County Meath, Ireland, on January 22.

His funeral Mass was celebrated in the Church of St Columbanus’ with the main celebrant Fr Seamus Houlihan, parish priest of Kilcomac, County Offaly, and long time friend of Fr Sean, who also attended St Kieran’s College Seminary, but many years after Fr Sean.

Fr Joe Gallagher, parish priest of Tullamore, also from County Offaly, and Fr Kevin Taylor JCL, from Adelaide, officiated and there were 35 concelebrants.

At the conclusion of Mass Fr Sean was buried in the grounds of the parish church. Bishop Thomas Deenihan, Bishop of Meath, presided over the rite of committal.

Fr Taylor led a decade of the rosary and all the clergy and those present sang the Salve Regina.

Fr Sean would have celebrated the 62nd anniversary of his ordination on June 8.
