Tough times for marine centre

The Marine Discovery Centre (MDC) at Henley Beach has shut its doors to schools for now but there are fears it may be at risk of permanent closure due to COVID-19 cancellations.
Partnerships and Marketing manager, Carmen Bishop, said in line with government guidelines the centre, which is adjacent to the Star of the Sea School, was now closed to school groups and larger events until at least Term 2.
Online resources are being made available to enable educators and students to continue to enjoy the MDC experience, however Ms Bishop said she was concerned about the long term future of the centre in this “tough financial climate”.

“In the last 12 months the Marine Discovery Centre has just completed an upgrade of its facilities, curriculum and education programs and was now in the process of sourcing sponsorship for event based activities,” she said.
“In this current market that has been deemed an almost impossible task as other businesses are also feeling the pinch. It would be an unfortunate loss to the State and our children should the centre have to close permanently.”
