Chief Judge Peter Kidd opened his sentencing remarks, which were streamed live from the court, with an acknowledgement of the “unique context” surrounding Cardinal Pell’s case.

In handing down the sentence, Justice Kidd said that he was not sitting in judgement of the Catholic religion or the Catholic Church.

Justice Kidd said the Cardinal’s sentence took into account his advanced age and failing health, otherwise blameless life and good character, and the ‘extra-curial’ punishment of the intense public scrutiny he has already suffered.

The Cardinal maintains his innocence and his appeal against his conviction will be considered over two days from June 5-6.
