Honouring St Josephine Bakhita
Local
Canossian Sisters joined members of the African Catholic community in celebrating the feast of St Josephine Bakhita in St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral earlier this month.
The feast day celebrates the life of the patron saint of Sudan. Taken into slavery, she became a Canossian Sister after going to Italy with her owners. She is also the patron saint of the victims of slavery.
Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking in Humans (ACRATH) joined Pope Francis in calling for Catholics to commit to raising awareness and taking action to eliminate slavery in all its forms.
The Mass in Adelaide also included the baptism and confirmation of members of the African community.
