Actress Teresa Palmer walked hand-in-hand with her young son Bodhi, joining Port Adelaide footballer and Hutt St Centre ambassador Justin Westhoff, Premier Jay Weatherill and Opposition Leader Steven Marshall in showing their support for the homeless. Hutt St Centre’s development and partnerships manager Michael Francis said the annual event had exceeded fundraising expectations

Mr Francis said there was an estimated 6000 South Australians experiencing homelessness and many of these people had mental health, drug and alcohol problems, with nearly all coming from difficult childhoods where domestic violence and sexual assault was “common place”.

Established by the Daughters of Charity in 1954, Mr Francis said recent figures showed Hutt St annually provided 52,000 meals, 12,500 showers and did 7500 loads of washing for the homeless.

Some of the services provided by the centre include mail collection, medical support, legal aid, access to electricity and toilets, a television lounge and library, computer room, as well as having 80 lockers available for use by clients. Visiting services of optometry, dentistry, hairdressing and podiatry arealso offered.
