Students run for Project Compassion

More than 500 Year 5 and 6 students from seven Catholic primary schools came together in beautiful weather to participate in the 2024 Caritas Fun Run on February 19.
The students completed either a 3km walk or 6km run on the sand starting from Angus Neill Reserve and looping between Brighton and Seacliff.
Ben Ryan, APRIM at St Martin de Porres, said the event gave the children the opportunity to physically challenge themselves and kick off the season of Lent and their fund raising for Project Compassion.
“Tracey Tessitore, from Caritas, passionately encouraged the students to think about the giftedness of their lives and to consider where their Project Compassion donations go,” Ben said.
“Following the run on the beach, the students participated in a treasure hunt in the park, where they searched for 30 hidden 20 cent pieces that symbolically represented the 30 pieces of silver paid to Judas.
“It was explained to the children that they were taking these silver pieces and instead of turning away from God’s will, like Judas, they were turning towards God’s will by transferring the silver pieces into a donation for Project Compassion.”
The 30 pieces of silver were then placed into one of the iconic Project Compassion boxes.
Schools who participated were: St Martin de Porres, Sheidow Pk; St Bernadette’s, St Marys; Emmaus, Woodcroft; Antonio, Morphett Vale; McAuley Community, Hove; St Joseph’s, Kingswood; and Stella Maris, Seacombe Gardens
