Unfurling the flag

St Catherine’s School, Stirling, recently welcomed a special visitor, the Speaker of the House of Representatives Milton Dick, as part of the Australian Parliament House Flag Roadshow.

The flag roadshow, supported by the Parliamentary Education Office and hosted by local federal members, is part of the Speaker’s commitment to uplifting civics education across the country.
Under the program, the iconic flag that usually flies above Parliament House in Canberra is travelling around the country to visit schools.

James, Aliyah, Raphi and Charlie discuss democracy with Rebekha Sharkie, Milton Dick and Mark Simpson.
The flag measures 12.8m x 6.4m – about the same size as a double decker bus.
Principal Mark Simpson said students were able to carefully unfurl the flag and see it up close.
“It was an incredible experience,” he said.
“Teamwork was essential to ensure the flag never touched the ground. Our students were respectful, engaged and made us incredibly proud. It was a truly memorable day.”
Federal Member for Mayo Rebekha Sharkie MP facilitated the visit to St Catherine’s.
She said the roadshow encouraged students to learn about Australian democracy and helped them understand the significance of the national flag.
