Tales of Irish women unearthed
News
Wakefield Press has published a new book which focuses on the stories of Irish women across Australasia.
Irish Women in the Antipodes: Foregrounded was co-edited by Dr Susan Arthure, Fidelma McCorry (Breen), Dr Dymphna Lonergan (a retired academic from Flinders University) and Dr Stephanie James who holds an adjunct position within the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Flinders University.
The first seven chapters focus on Irish women in South Australia.
“These are often the stories of Catholic women, those who were poore
r and mostly overlooked in history,” said Dr Arthure who has a PhD in archaeology from Flinders University.
“One chapter by Stephanie James is about the early years of the Dominican Sisters in Adelaide between 1868 and 1873. It’s a great account of the development of Catholicism in the early years of the colony.”
Irish Women in the Antipodes: Foregrounded was launched on April 14 by Dr Kiera Lindsey. Copies of the book can be purchased at wakefieldpress.com.au
