The Chinese Catholic Community celebrated the Lunar New Year with Mass in St Joseph's Church, Tranmere, on Sunday February 2.

Vicar General Fr Dean Marin presided at the Eucharistic celebration and the community prepared red envelopes containing bookmarks with bible verses to be used as encouragement throughout the year.
Community members also prepared gifts to be presented to the altar at the time of the offering.
They included a New Year cake, symbolising prosperity for every year to come, success in careers and an increase of financial fortune; kumquats, representing a house full of gold and jade and bringing good luck and good fortune; and sugar, as a symbol of sweetness for a good year.
Spokesperson Louisa Au said the red envelopes were a way for elder members to present best wishes to the young.
“Traditionally, red envelopes are also called lucky money and are a sign of happiness and good luck,” she said.
