Youth rise to the occasion

The third annual Rise Up tree planting event hosted by the Catholic Office for Youth and Young Adults (COYYA), in partnership with the City of Adelaide, saw 130 students from 12 secondary schools plant 2800 seedlings on September 19.

Coinciding with the Season of Creation, the plantings take the total number of native trees introduced to the city over the past three years to 6000.

This year the Catholic Women’s League donated 1200 seedings, with the remainder provided by the City of Adelaide.

The initiative aims to repopulate native flora and foster a deeper connection between young people and their local environment.

The site for the plantings was GS Kingston Park/Wirrarninthi on the corner of Sir Donald Bradman Drive and Catholic Cemetery Road.

Throughout the morning, students worked in mixed-school groups, exploring the park, researching existing species and reflecting on the long-term impact of their efforts.

Diocesan Youth Ministry Support officer Michaela Howard-Jones said the event was about more than planting trees. It’s about planting hope, connection and responsibility.

“These students absolutely rose to the occasion,” she said.
